October 20: Good Food. Good History. Better Days.

Pull up a chair, grab a bowl of jambalaya, and let’s take a little trip through history!

On this day in 1803, the U.S. Senate approved the Louisiana Purchase, changing the course of American history forever. And while the story of that land is far more complicated than a simple transaction, just think about the incredible culture we associate with Louisiana today! The jazz, the Cajun and Creole cooking, the festivals, the music, and the people who make it such a special place. There’s just something about Louisiana that gets into your soul! ⚜️❤️

And October 20th has plenty more stories to tell!

🇺🇸 In 1944, General Douglas MacArthur returned to the Philippines, fulfilling his famous promise.

🎶 In 1962, Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s Monster Mash reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100! Just in time for Halloween!

🇦🇺 In 1973, the magnificent Sydney Opera House officially opened its doors to the world.

🎸 And in 1977, tragedy struck when a plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in Mississippi. Today, we remember the six lives lost and the musical legacy that continues to touch generations.

We’re also celebrating International Chefs Day, International Sloth Day, National Day on Writing, and so many other special observances!

But here’s what I really want you to take away from today.

Life moves fast. Sometimes so fast that we forget to enjoy the little things. A good meal. An old favorite song. A conversation with someone we love. A stranger who makes us smile.

History reminds us that every single day has a story.

And today, we get to write ours.

So be kind. Laugh a little louder. Make somebody’s day better. Order something delicious. Turn up the music. And don’t forget to appreciate the beautiful, wonderfully different people and cultures that make this world what it is.
